St. Paul's new East African Elementary Magnet offers cultural lessons to attract families 

The community helped recruitment efforts for the school, which is part of the district's strategy to counter declining enrollment. 

Last spring, St. Paul gave Abdisalam Adam three months to start the nation's first East African magnet school. Here's what happened. 

St. Paul Public Schools is expanding its cultural offerings to the East African community. With its new pre-K–5 school, the district plans to focus on the diverse cultures of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

St. Paul schools announce plans for first East African elementary magnet school
The school will open in fall 2023 at the site of Jackson Elementary, which was closed because of declining district enrollment. For many parents, students and educators in the East African community, the announcement fulfills a long-held aspiration.
